A recent crash during a cop chase has proved to be fatal for the suspect’s 15-year-old son.
Involving film crews for Live PD, these sheriffs were filing but did not air due to the nature of the exchange and quick escalation of the situation. Unlike Atlanta, Birmingham does not have a no-chase policy, and officers engaged this vehicle on May 16th at about 11:50 a.m. near Midfield. The Live PD crew initially confirmed what a drug transaction taking place at a gas station was. After watching the transaction, the officers decided to engage. The teams on-site included the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Neighborhood Enforcement Team.
The sheriff’s team was able to stop both people involved in the transaction and then confirmed that the transaction did occur as witnessed. The “seller” had remained in the vehicle, which contained the driver and two male passengers. When deputies approached the seller’s vehicle, they fled the scene, and a chase began.
The driver, later identified as Terry, took deputies throughout the Midfield area and then onto an interstate. Police attempted to establish roadblocks that were unsuccessful. The Neighborhood Enforcement Team recognized that the driver was not yielding through intersections and chose to end their pursuit. They stopped engagement and did not follow.
After sheriff’s ended their pursuit, Terry, the driver, did not yield to traffic and collided with a Big Rig on Arkadelphia and Eighth Avenue West. Terry attempted to flee the scene, but police took him into custody. Terry had heroin in his possession.
The passenger sitting in the front seat had minor injuries, was questioned and then released. But the victim here was Terry’s 15-year-old son who was in the back seat. He sustained severe injuries, was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead just after 12:45 p.m.
Terry faces charges for possession of paraphernalia, eluding law enforcement, reckless endangerment, unlawful distribution, and resisting arrest. It’s unclear if the death of his son will result in additional charges.
